The Ducati Multistrada D|air® system was designed to activate in just 45 milliseconds and protect the vital parts of the rider's body that are exposed to impact and were not previously protected, absorbing the force of impact thanks to an inflatable bag integrated by Dainese into the jacket.
The Multistrada 1200 S D|air is equipped with a sophisticated algorithm which manages the data supplied by the two triaxial accelerometer sensors fixed to the bottom right and left of the front fork of the Multistrada, and by two accelerometers fitted in the electronic control unit (ECU) of the D|air® and located below the seat. When the sensors detect a potential collision, the algorithm takes just 25 milliseconds to decide whether or not to deploy the airbag. If the airbag deploys, the D|air® ECU which is on board the Multistrada and is in constant two-way radio contact with the Dainese jackets, activates inflation of the airbag taking just 20 milliseconds. In just 45 milliseconds from the start of impact, the system will have activated its protective function.
The dashboard of the Multistrada 1200 S D|air integrates the main control warning lights, keeping the rider constantly informed of the system operation. A "Rider" warning light and a "Passenger" warning light notify the rider of the connection status of the jackets, while the “D|air” warning light warns the rider of any faults. Designed to keep the user informed, the Rider and Passenger sections remain permanently on (green light) to confirm that both jackets with the airbags are connected (paired) to the D|air® system and are ready to be used. If there is a fault with the jacket, the warning light will notify the user by flashing slowly. The warning light remains off when the system is active and ready for use but the yellow light activates and remains on when there is insufficient battery charge in the jacket or there is a D|air® system error.
When it intervenes
The Multistrada 1200 S D|air® intelligent system is able to recognise situations in which the jacket airbag needs to be deployed. These scenarios include: a) frontal collision with another object b) side or rear collision with another vehicle c) loss of control and the bike sliding on one side. In this last situation, the airbag inflates to protect the rider and the passenger if the bike slides into an obstacle after the crash. Thanks to its ability to recognise these scenarios, the system does not intervene in situations which do not pose a threat of danger, for example, if the rider is driving aggressively, loses balance during a low speed manoeuvre, or the parked bike simply falls over.
In the event of impact, the critical aspect is speed, so anything in excess of 80 milliseconds is too slow. D|air® activates and deploys 12 litres of airbag protection in just 45 milliseconds thanks to high-tech wireless transmission.D|air® switches on when you turn on the ignition, recognising the airbag jackets paired with the Multistrada’s Electronic Control Unit. Constant two-way connectivity via two radio channels ensures the system will trigger instantly if necessary. Important functional data can viewed on the dashboard for both the rider’s and passenger’s airbag jackets.
The jacket and vest incorporate two high-pressure, three-dimensional, 12-litre airbags inflated by 'cold' technology gas generators. The three-dimensional structure provides and controls high-pressure expansion thanks to the pre-formed shape designed to wrap around and protect the rider's body. The jacket weighs just 1.5 kg more than an ordinary jacket, providing the same levels of comfort yet ensures much higher impact absorption.
The rider needs maximum protection against obstacles but at the same time, movement on the seat must not be hindered. The D|air® system activates on the back, chest and shoulders and adds anatomical support to the neck without exerting excessive pressure. The force of impact can be reduced by up to 72% compared to the use of a simple back guard. The system also offers support to the helmet in the event of an accident preventing movements which could otherwise be dangerous.
The D|air® Street Ducati jacket integrated system has an on/off switch in the right part of the belt. Inside this belt there is a vibra-motor and with this, the system communicates through the coded vibrations. The system also requires a maintenance check every 24 months starting from its first connection (pairing) with the Multistrada 1200 S D|air® and is powered by a battery pack charged via a USB connection built into the garment (a five-hour charge will guarantee 30 hours of autonomy). The scheduled maintenance reminders and battery levels of the D|air® jacket are clearly communicated to the rider via the Multistrada 1200 S on-board instrumentation.
